The Influence of Depression on the Spouse Abuse : Focused on the Mediating Effect of Problem Drinking

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to verify the mediating effect of problem drinking on the relationship between depression and spouse abuse by separating man and woman. For this study, data were drawn from the 8th wave panel data provided at The Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs and Seoul National University. It included 4,166 persons of 30 years or more man or woman. To analyze the data, SPSS 20.0 and Logistic regression analysis were used. The results of this study were summarized as follows : (1) Depression of men and women were positively influenced on spouse abuse. (2) Depression of men were influenced on problem drinking, but in case of women were not influenced on problem drinking. (3) Problem drinking of men mediated between depression and spouse abuse. On the other side, problem drinking women didn"t mediate between depression and spouse abuse. Based on the results, some implications were discussed to reduce spouse abuse for men through problem drinking"s reduction.
